Description

Summary

A school bus driver will operate a school bus keeping the safety of students and school property at a high priority.  They will pickup and deliver students between home and school within an established route and time schedule.  In addition, they will transport students to special events. A bus driver will perform daily inspections of a bus/transportation equipment and do other related work as required.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(other duties may be assigned)

  • Knowledge of safe driving practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid procedures and methods.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment.
  • Able to use tact and diplomacy.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Maintain school bus driver certification.
  • Follow all safety and procedures as stated in the OHUSC Bus Driver Manual.
  • Other duties and jobs as assigned or directed.

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual:

  • Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must submit a Criminal Background Check
  • Must adhere to OHUSC board policies

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • A valid Indiana State Commercial Drivers License Level B with airbrake and S endorsement required.
  • Pass the Annual Safety Meeting (ASM)
  • Basic First Aid procedures

 

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Be able to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Be able to speak effectively with other staff or public.
    • Positive communication skills.

 

Reasoning Ability

  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Be able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Computer Skills

  • A working knowledge of email is preferred

 

Other Qualifications

  • Must relate well with children
  • Must work well with other drivers and aides
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Evaluation

Each driver will be evaluated at least once a year.  If there is a new person in the position, then that person will be evaluated twice during the first year of employment.
